Appareo Systems, LLC and Guardian Mobility are pleased to announce an agreement to integrate Appareo Systems Flight Data Monitoring (FDM) Equipment with Guardian’s latest satellite flight-following products. This combination will provide aircraft operators with a streamlined system that provides the long-term safety benefits of a complete FDM program along with the immediate feedback of a satellite-based system.

FDM or Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA) systems involve the recording of detailed information covering all of the characteristics of each flight flown for post-flight analysis and debriefing. These systems, such as Appareo’s ALERTS FDM/FOQA system are well suited to collecting and analyzing large amounts of flight data and have been an important part of improving commercial flight safety over the past several decades.

Satellite-based flight-following systems also play a critical role in today’s aviation marketplace, allowing operators to track their aircraft in near-real time from anywhere in the world. In addition to the benefits of tracking, Guardian Gryphon provides a toolkit for integration with on board devices, providing a two-way satellite link to these devices.

By teaming together, Appareo Systems and Guardian Mobility are offering customers a solution that combines the benefits of each system.

With the combined solution from Guardian and Appareo, operators can set specific thresholds for maneuvers and geographical areas. Any activity outside those limitations is automatically transmitted in real-time, instantly alerting operations personnel to the developing situation. These events are infinitely customizable and could include excessive rate of descent, extreme maneuvers or flying outside a designated area.

“Appareo is pleased to offer our customers the added dimensions of flight following and in-flight notification of important events while simultaneously expanding our FDM offering through the recording of even more detailed flight data for post-flight analysis,” said Jeff Johnson, Appareo’s vice president of business development. “By connecting Guardian Mobility’s innovative Gryphon to Appareo’s GAU 3000, we can create a system of unprecedented capabilities while requiring no additional avionics boxes and consuming no instrument panel space.”

The core of the system is Appareo’s new lightweight, modular flight data recording device, the GAU 3000. The GAU 3000 integrates a sophisticated inertial sensing suite and GPS receiver to capture and record detailed flight data. Additionally, the GAU 3000 is equipped with ARINC 429 and other inputs that allow the unit to record data generated by a number of modern avionics such as glass cockpit displays and radar altimeters. This data is stored on the unit’s ED-155 compliant crash survivable memory module and a removable high-capacity SD memory card for easy access for FDM. As a modular unit, the GAU 3000 also easily integrates with additional accessories including cockpit image and audio recorders, discreet inputs, ground-based wireless off-load modules, and the Guardian Griffin satellite tracking system.

Guardian Mobility’s new Gryphon system is a perfect compliment to the GAU 3000. The integration of both products into one will permit sending real-time alerts of onboard events automatically with no human intervention. This improves safety and reduces aircraft on-ground time for quick financial payback.

“Appareo is an excellent partner for Guardian, and together we bring a complete solution to aircraft operators who need to ensure the ongoing safety of their air fleet,” said Jean Carr, president and CEO of Guardian Mobility.
