AAMS re-elects President for second one-year term

The board of directors of the Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS) elected Daniel G. Hankins, MD, FACEP, of Oronoco, Minn., to serve a second one-year term as president of the organization following AAMS’ 2010-2013 elections. Dr. Hankins and other board officers were elected during the Air Medical Transport Conference (AMTC), held Oct. 11-13, 2010, in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Dr. Hankins has been co-medical director, Mayo Clinic Medical Transport and Emergency Communications, and consultant to the Department of Emergency Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., since 1991. Previously, he was medical director for Life Link 3 Critical Care Transport in St. Paul, Minn., from 1985 to 1990.

Dr. Hankins received a Bachelor of Arts degree from George Washington University, Washington, D.C., in 1970, and a doctor of medicine from the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1974. He completed his medical internship and residency programs in Internal Medicine at the University of Minnesota Hospitals, Minneapolis, Minn., in 1975 and 1977, respectively. His board certifications include American Board of Emergency Medicine (1983, 1992, 2002) and the American Board of Internal Medicine (1977). He is a member of and AAMS liaison to the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and a member of the Air Medical Physician Association (AMPA) and the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP). Previous leadership positions include past chair of the ACEP Air Medical section, past chair of the NAEMSP Air Medical Task Force and past chair of the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Services (CAMTS) board.

The 2010-2011 AAMS board-elected officers are Timothy Pickering, JD, EMT-P, CMTE, director of public affairs, Air Evac EMS, Inc., West Plains, Mo., who is re-elected as vice president; Greg Hildebrand, FACHE, MSHSA, CMTE, executive director, Life Star of Kansas, Topeka, Kan., who is newly elected as secretary; and Mike Lamacchia, CMTE, EMT-P, vice president, Education and Research, STARS, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, who is re-elected as treasurer.

Elected by AAMS members to fill 2010-2012 director-at-large seats are Region 2 – Martin F. (Marty) Arkus, CMTE, Med-Trans Corp./Arizona LifeLine, Tucson, Ariz.; Region 3 -Tim Pickering, JD, EMT-P, CMTE, Air Evac EMS, Inc., West Plains, Mo.; Region 4 – Jack Sosebee, CMTE, MSHA, LP, Teddy Bear Transport, Cook Children’s Medical Center, Fort Worth, Texas; Region 5 – Hank Miller, MSEL, JD, CMTE, Survival Flight, University of Michigan Health Systems, Ann Arbor, Mich.; and Region 6 – Gerald Pagano, ATP, CFI, CFII, ASPM, Health Care District of Palm Beach County “Trauma Hawk,” West Palm Beach, Fla.; and Region 8 – Ian Badham, BSc, OAM, NRMA CareFlight, Westmead, Australia.

Also, elected to fill an associate director position is Craig Yale, CMTE, Air Methods Corporation, Englewood, Colo.

In addition, David Thomson, MS, MD, FACEP, CMTE, St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center, Syracuse, N.Y., has been appointed to fill a vacant at-large director position. He joins currently serving at-large directors Betsy Sullivan Casanave, MHA, RN, BSN, CMTE, EMT, WakeMed Health & Hospitals/Mobile Critical Care Services, Raleigh, N.C.; Daniel G. Hankins, MD, FACEP,CMTE, Mayo Medical Transport/Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.; and Greg Hildenbrand, CMTE, Life Star Of Kansas, Topeka, Kan.

Regional directors currently serving on the AAMS Board include Region I – Eveline Bisson, RN, BSN, CMTE, Northwest MedStar Inland Northwest Health Services, Spokane Valley, Wash., and Region VII – Mike Lamacchia, EMT-P, CMTE, STARS Centre for Education & Research, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Currently serving as CAMTS representative is Dudley Smith, MSHPA, CMTE, Dudley Smith Consulting, Cleves, Ohio.

Currently serving in a public director position is Clyde Deschamp, PhD, Central Mississippi EMS District/University Of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, Miss. The board’s immediate past president is Sandra Kinkade, MSN, MBA, CMTE, Kinkade International, Solana Beach, Calif. AAMS’ Executive Director/CEO Dawn M. Mancuso, MAM, CAE, also serves on the board in an ex-officio, non-voting capacity.
