The Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS) is proud to announce a strong renewed commitment to the safety goals of the International Helicopter Safety Team (IHST). Launched in 2005, this worldwide effort led by the IHST has been centered on uncovering the means to drive down the universal helicopter accident rate. The objective is to decrease the international helicopter accident rate by 80 percent by the year 2016.

An official commitment signing took place on March 6, 2011 at the Heli-Expo annual conference in Orlando, Florida and marked the first time that such an extensive range of industry partners signed on to the IHST safety initiative. In addition to AAMS, co-signatories included the Air Medical Operators Association, the Association of Critical Care Transport, the MedEvac Foundation International, the National EMS Pilots Association, as well as international organizations such as the Aeromedical Society of Australasia and the European HEMS and Air Ambulance Committee (EHAC).

AAMS has signed on to the IHST process of data driven best practices and calls upon AAMS members to unite in creating a emergency medical transport system that is the safest possible for our patients and the general public alike. Most recently, AAMS’ notable safety efforts have included our annual Safety Management Training Academy, now entering its second year; a full track of safety-focused sessions at our annual Air Medical Transport Conference; our Vision Zero program, developed in 2005 to create and encourage a “culture of safety” through education, awareness and personal vigilance; and the on-going funding of safety-focused industry research by AAMS’ charitable arm, the MedEvac Foundation.

“AAMS is proud to join with our industry partners in a collective effort to build steady progress toward IHST’s goal of an 80 percent reduction in the global helicopter accident rate,” said Dr. Daniel Hankins, MD, FACEP, emergency physician and president of the Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS). “We look forward to meeting the IHST challenge on behalf of the patients we serve each and every day.”
