17 Nov, 11The Times of India has reported that India is close to agreeing a follow-on contract for another 59 Mil Mi-17V5 transport helicopters. This news follows only days after Russian Helicopters announced delivery of the first batch from the current order for 80 such helicopters.
Contract value is said to be around $1 billion, on the basis of the 80 having been sold in a $1.345 billion deal in 2008, and the second order appears to be tied in to options agreed back then.
Confirmation is expected by the end of March 2012, and the helicopters will be built at the Kazan factory where the first batch are being produced.
Around 11,000 Mil Mi-8 and Mi-17s have been built to date
