On Friday, September 14, HAI welcomed several members from ATEC, the Aviation Technician Education Council, for a discussion about the helicopter industry’s other impending shortage: maintenance personnel.

“The shortage is real, and it’s only going to get worse,” said Harold Summers, HAI’s director of flight operations and technical services, who led the meeting. “Now is the time for the manufacturers and operators to step up and support schools by supplying them with run-out engines and systems that the students can practice on – and become familiar with rotorcraft at the same time.”

The discussion centered on how the two organizations can work more closely together to encourage young people going through maintenance training programs to take positions in the helicopter industry. Representing ATEC were Amy Kienast Linderman from the Michigan Institute of Aviation and Technology, Andrew Smith from Kansas State University, Don Stark of Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio, and Paul Herrick from the University of Alaska at Anchorage. Other HAI staff attending included: Jose Orozco, operations and safety assistant; Kristin Anderson, manager of education programs; Annette Duplinsky, director of membership; Chris Dancy, director of communications and public relations, and David York, vice president of regulation and international affairs.

During the meeting, Summers also stressed the need not only to teach aspiring technicians about safety management systems, but to establish safety management systems at technical schools, so that when technicians graduate, they have been inculcated with a culture of safety that will be carried forward into their careers.
