CHC Helicopter, the world’s largest helicopter services company, has launched an advanced engineering apprenticeship scheme to foster the next generation of engineering talent.

CHC has joined forces with Resource Group’s Part 147 approved training organisation, LRTT, to develop the apprenticeship programme which will see 35 young people expected to join CHC’s UK and Dutch operations over the next five years, with many more anticipated in the future.

Delivered for CHC by Resource Group’s aviation maintenance training division LRTT, the apprentices will complete eight months of classroom training in Cirencester, England, and 16 months of practical experience at a CHC operation in Aberdeen or North Denes, or Den Helder in the Netherlands.

Mark Abbey, CHC’s regional director for West North Sea, said: “CHC’s global team represents an exceptional combination of skill and dedication to helicopter engineering excellence. With this scheme, we’re equipping ourselves for the future by selecting, engaging, and developing the best young talents in the industry.

“Apprenticeships offer the chance to nurture skills in young engineers which, along with the benefit that brings to CHC, also creates sustainability in the wider engineering industry.”

Already the market leader servicing 55 percent of the North Sea sector, demand for CHC’s services is increasing across the UK Continental Shelf as the oil-and-gas industry prepares for its biggest boom for 30 years.

Mr. Abbey recognises that excellence in engineering is crucial in CHC’s business:

“We’re building our existing team of engineers and giving a new generation of
engineers the opportunity to train to the highest standard, working with some of the most technically advanced machines in the world.”

The apprenticeship is open to applicants aged between 16 and 24. Based on the Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies (SEMTA) framework, successful apprentices will work towards a European Aviation Safety Agency approved qualification, as well as level 3 Diploma and a level 3 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Aeronautical Engineering.

Seven places will be available every year. The deadline for applications is June 21st, 2013 with the first intake of graduates in September 2013.
