Universal Avionics SBAS-FMS Offers Major Step toward ADS-B Compliance

Universal Avionics SBAS-FMS qualifies as an approved ARINC A743A position source required for Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) compliance. As the foundation of the ADS-B solution, it interfaces with all ADS-B transponders including the commonly used Honeywell RCZ-8XX Series and Rockwell Collins TDR-94D.

A surveillance technology incorporating air and ground aspects, ADS-B provides Air Traffic Control (ATC) with a more accurate picture of the aircraft’s 3-dimensional position in the enroute, terminal, approach and surface environments. ADS-B consists of two different services, ADS-B In and ADS-B Out, with the latter affecting most aircraft operators in the United States, Europe and parts of the Asia-Pacific region. Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam and Taiwan all now require ADS-B Out, and mandated compliance to ADS-B Out technology is growing in other regions around the world. In the United States, the FAA has strictly mandated ADS-B Out by January 1, 2020, unless operators can obtain exemption to the rule from the FAA. This will require a compliance plan by the organization requesting the rule exemption, and can be very difficult to achieve. In other countries, ADS-B Out may be mandated even earlier than 2020.

“With the U.S. mandate less than 5 years away, now is the time to upgrade to have more flexibility and avoid the installation traffic and increased downtime,” said Dan Reida, Universal Avionics Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “While taking a major step toward ADS-B compliance, equipping with Universal Avionics SBAS-FMS provides many other benefits such as Localizer Performance with Vertical guidance (LPV) approach capabilities in LPV approved installations, no need for RAIM predictions, improved accuracy and integrity, and more,” he added.

In addition to avoiding the pitfalls of procrastinating, installation of ADS-B Out today already offers many available benefits. Besides increased coverage, aircraft that are currently equipped for ADS-B Out also realize improved situational awareness and safety, and reduced separation between aircraft.

Throughout 2015, Universal Avionics is offering an upgrade incentive program for non-Universal Avionics operators to trade in their legacy FMS or GPS system for a new, SBAS-capable Universal Avionics FMS.
