The update from the project Facebook page says so much and our hearts go out to the support team at this time

“With heavy hearts we have to write that unfortunately yesterday we lost contact with Sergey during his flight over Davis Strait … Almost immediately after receiving the last Delorme tracking message with 0 speed and altitude. We contacted various SAR and Canadian authorities … Canadians dispatched several aircraft and ships to search around the last known coordinates … So far the search produced no results … The search is affected by fog and heavy ice conditions in the search area …”

The search effort includes two Hercules aircraft, and a AW101 Cormorant helicopter. A Transport Canada patrol plane and a fishing boat in the area are also assisting. The Canadian Forces Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax is taking the lead role in the task.

Russian pilot Sergey Ananov had refuelled in Iqaluit, Nunavut, and was on a 500 mile leg to Nuuk in Greenland when contact was lost. He was reported overdue at 3.20pm Eastern time on Saturday. Ananov had completed his flight eastbound through Russia, and had spent many days in the U.S. visiting most of the contiguous states. He had left the American continent to fly to Greenland, Iceland and Northerm Europe back to Moscow. Ananov is a very experienced helicopter pilot and has a significant number of hours on the R22, including various records on the two-seater type.
