Croatia buys 16 US Army surplus OH-58Ds

The Defence Committee of the Croatian Parliament consented to the procurement of the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopters and to the appointment of Lieutenant General Mirko Šundov as the new Chief of the General Staff succeeding General Drago Lovrić as of 1 March 2016.

The project of equipment of  the Armed Forces with a squadron of OH-58D Kiowa Warrior armed reconnaissance helicopters from the U.S. surplus is planned to provide new helicopter capabilities of the Croatian Armed Forces. The donation comprises 16 helicopters and three training simulators (and the supplementary goods and services) and amounts to 286 mil Kuna (VAT 84 mil kuna included). The portion of the amount will be procured through the U.S. Government support funds  (cca 100 mil kn) and the remainder from the state budget of the Republic of Croatia (position of the Ministry of Defence for  the period 2016 -2020).The total amount exceeding the sum of 5 mil EUR, the Defence Act of the Republic of Croatia mandates the consent from the Defence Committee of the Croatian Parliament. 

The term of office of General Drago Lovrić expires on 29 February (under the Defence Act of the Republic of Croatia) and the proposed nomination by the Croatian Government of Lieutenant General Mirko Šundov as new Chief of the General Staff was sent to the Defence Committee of the Croatian Parliament for consent prior to the appointment by the President of the Republic as the Supreme Commander of the Croatian Armed Forces.
