Located in a rural area, Clay County Hospital is located in a less easiliy accessible area.  As a critical access hospital, it focuses on common conditions and outpatient care, and frequently needs to refer patients with other conditions to other hospitals.

In turn this means more than 100 Clay County helicopter transports per year, mostly with patients leaving the hospital in the Illinois town of Flora for another more specialist hospital.

Clay County Hospital’s heliport has been honoured as  “Heliport of the Year” by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).  The main reason cited by Brian Williamsen, IDOT community relations manager was that it is considered one of the safest and best maintained heliports in the state.  IDOT also considered airport management’s coordination with the department and the hospital’s promotion of seminars and aviation events.

IDOT numbers 146 heliports across the state. Past winners of the best hospital heliport award have been Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, Quincy Blessing Hospital, St. Mary’s Good Samaritan in Mt. Vernon, and St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
