The Kurow Medical Centre might be able to use the Kurow Recreation Reserve as an emergency helipad, pending the vote on approving a lease, but under four conditions. They have to meet Civil Aviation Authority requirements, adhere to proposed lease provisions, attain resource consent and that the helipad will be subject to public notification.

The Waitaki District Council voted on Wednesday the 14th September, but more work is needed to create the helipad. They have to get the approval of neighbouring properties and write an environmental effect report for the area. The helipad will be 12m in diameter, with eight omnidirectional inset lights and made out of concrete.

As reported by The Otago Daily Times, patients who suffer intense trauma are currently air lifted to the Kurow rugby grounds and then transported to an ambulance which takes them to the Medical Centre. The Kurow Medical Centre has said that this causes extra distress for the patient as they have to be handled too often.
