Taiwan has turned down the offer from the US to sell 8 – 10 Sikorsky MH-60R helicopters. Although the Republic of China Navy (ROCN) needs to replace their MD500 anti-submarine helicopters, Shephard Media reports that the defence industry does not have enough funds to replace the aging crafts.

Taiwan still retains 21 S-70C Thunderhawks they bought from Sikorsky and their S-70C(M)-1 and 2 helicopters, although upgrades will be needed. The avionic and combat systems need an upgrade, as well as an overhaul is needed on the platform’s airframes. The costs of these upgrades and their future shipbuilding programme is the reason they cannot afford the MH-60Rs. The shipbuilding programme is Taiwan’s main priority, costing $14.7 million and spanning over 23 years.
