Sikorsky’s worker union, the Teamsters, is asking for approval of its members for a 25% pay cut for new employees who are hired after 1 July 2017. These concessions include the new two-tier wage system, a pension change where the company pays into a savings plan, a change in the hours of a working week. Workers are now expected to work a 36 hour work week and are being paid for a 40 hour week. They will have to work three 12 hour weekend days and overtime will be paid after the completion of 36 hours.

All of this is part of a state deal to make sure that Sikorsky is able to produce next-gen helicopters for the US Navy until 2032. The vote for this change was unanimous within the executive board. The leaders within the group, reports Hartford Courant, have urged members to accept the concession, albeit difficult. That should they decline, the membership of the union is sure to decline over time.
