Lieutenant Commander Richard Lightfoot and Petty Officer Alan Speed were awarded for their extraordinary work they did last year. The two Royal Navy rescue workers saved 12 people from a bus that was in turmoil during the floods of Storm Frank.

Awarded by the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace, Lt Cdr Lightfoot received an Air Force Cross and PO Speed received a Queen’s Gallantry Medal. Due to the storm, the team had been out all day, the bus being their fourth call of five. They knew they were running out of fuel but endeavoured to stay, using hand signals and glow sticks to communicate with each other, reports The Herald.
