Polk County deputies have arrested a Lakeland man for reportedly shining a laser into the cockpit of a sheriff’s helicopter and temporarily blinding the pilot.

Years or wrangling over what to do with the lone Lakeland police helicopter appears to be ending as the city finalizes a deal to merge helicopter operations with Polk County. The new “Joint Aviation Unit” will be headed by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, which owns two helicopters.
