The ProMetal Rapid Casting Technology division of The Ex One Company, LLC (with locations in Irwin, PA, Troy, MI and Houston, TX) in partnership with Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation was awarded the coveted Robert L. Pinckney Award by the Vertical Flight Society of the American Helicopter Society. The award is given in recognition of notable achievement in manufacturing research and development for rotorcraft or rotorcraft components brought to fruition in recent years. The ProMetal RCT/Sikorsky Digital Casting Team is recognized for developing and producing defect-free magnesium sand castings from digital molds with a 50 percent reduction in lead time. RCT enables digital production of sand molds and cores, eliminating the need for hard tooling in the casting process. Sikorsky provided the funding to develop the process and modeling techniques for a special grade of magnesium in a thin wall configuration difficult to cast by conventional techniques. The award was created by The Boeing Company in 1995 to honor the memory of Robert L. Pinckney, an eminent manufacturing engineer. Randy Gilmore, Director of Technology at Ex One, was on hand to accept the award at the Phoenix Convention Center on May 12, 2010.
