Mid-Continent Instruments proudly announced today that Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Cindy Highbarger has been named a recipient of the Wichita Business Journal’s first CFO Awards. One of 12 elite CFOs, Highbarger was chosen from more than 100 nominees in three categories based on company size.

Highbarger earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Wichita State University and worked as a CPA before beginning her career at Mid-Continent Instruments as manager of accounting and systems in 1996. After being promoted to controller in 1997 and CFO in 2007, her responsibilities expanded to include operations, information technology, human resources, accounting, purchasing, material control and shipping/receiving.

“My goal as CFO has always been to provide a consistent, cohesive process for business operations that creates improved functions and customer service, both internally and externally,” said Highbarger. “While the past year introduced new challenges, our team diligently worked to streamline processes and further strengthen the connection with our customers, which has translated into a solid business structure. I am honored to have been chosen alongside such distinguished nominees as a recipient of this award.”

The winning CFOs showed exemplary adaptation skills in a tightening economy — proving aptitudes for overseeing their companies’ respective bottom lines while aligning with key administration strategies. According to selection committee member Doug Hensler, dean of the W. Frank Barton School of Business at Wichita State University, the core functions of the CFO position changed with the downward-trending economy. Fellow selection committee member Gary Allerheiligen, former partner at Grant Thornton LLP and current board member of Carson Bank, agreed.

“I think that it emphasizes the importance of having a CFO through these types of economic times,” Allerheiligen said. “You’ve got to have that skill set to support and supplement management decisions.” Those CFOs who have been the most successful at keeping their companies steady and even flourishing earned this outstanding ranking.

Winners of the 2010 CFO Awards will be honored during a luncheon at Botanica. The July 15 celebration begins at 11:45 a.m.
