Universal Avionics Systems Corporation’s Cockpit Voice / Flight Data Recorder (CVFDR) has been selected by Sikorsky Aircraft, headquartered in Stratford, Conn., as a forward-fit option on Sikorsky’s S-76C++™ and standard on S-76D™ commercial helicopters. Universal Avionics’ CVFDR-145R with Recorder Independent Power Supply (RIPS) will be standard on the S-76D and will be optional on the S-76C++ platform. This marks Universal Avionics’ entry into the Parts 27 and Parts 29 rotorcraft market with a cockpit voice and flight data recorder as a forward-fit option. Sikorsky Aircraft is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp.

Universal Avionics recently introduced a new line of CVRs and digital FDRs which comply with the latest U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Final Rule mandating RIPS in forward-fit applications for certain aircraft. Recorder Independent Power Supply (RIPS) technology provides a backup power source in the event of a main power fail. Universal Avionics’ CVFDR is the lightest CVR and digital FDR combination unit with an internal RIPS to achieve FAA and European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification approvals.

Universal is eager to enter into another collaboration with Sikorsky, a company that has been an industry leader in civil helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft for over 60 years. Sikorsky’s most advanced product line is the S-92® Helicopter with continuous upgrades slated by the company. Universal has previously equipped Sikorsky’s S-76® and S-92® platforms with UNS-1 Flight Management / Multi-Mission Systems (FMS/MMMS) and Application Server Units (ASU), with current production models being equipped with Universal’s WAAS/SBAS-FMSs.

“We are extremely pleased to work with Sikorsky to supply this innovative voice and flight data recorder,” remarks Robert Clare, Director North American Marketing for Universal Avionics. “We continue to employ progressive technology to present the most compact and lightest weight recorders to the aircraft industry.”
