In response to an invitation from the International Helicopter Safety Symposium, the Global Helicopter Flight Data Monitoring Steering Group is pleased to announce that they will present an HFDM workshop at IHSS 2010, scheduled to coincide with the HeliTech tradeshow in Estoril, Portugal. The IHSS will be held on October 3rd and 4th, with HeliTech running October 5th – 7th. For full conferences and registration information, please go to www.IHST.org and www.helitechevents.com/Portugal/
The primary aim of the workshop is to provide attendees with a complete picture of HFDM, from the basics of setting up a program to the benefits operators can expect to realize in the form of improved safety and increased business. Experts in the field of HFDM will guide participants through the process of implementing an effective program regardless of the type of operation. The subjects covered will include:
  • Introduction to HFDM
  • Customer perspective
  • Case Studies
  • Technical Overview
  • Concurrent Discussion Groups to answer your questions on matters relating to:
  • * Operational aspects of running an HFDM programme
  • * Technical issues associated with hardware/software
  • * Process and Procedural – how to integrate with your safety management system
“This workshop will be a great introduction to the safety and business benefits of a carefully considered and well-implemented HFDM plan,” said Capt Mike Pilgrim, Co-Chair of the Global HFDM Steering Group. “By presenting at IHSS in Portugal, we’ll be able to advance the level of understanding of HFDM in Europe and really drive home the importance of this critical effort to improve helicopter safety worldwide.”

About Helicopter Flight Data Monitoring
Flight data monitoring programs have been in common use by major commercial airlines for over 40 years, but have only recently begun to be utilized by helicopter operators, due in part to the limited availability of hardware and software tailored to their unique needs. In HFDM programs, aircraft are equipped with data monitoring devices that record information about each flight. That data is then transferred to a software program which analyses the fleet’s operational performance and identifies areas for potential improvement. Armed with this information, helicopter operators are able to better understand how their aircraft are being flown and design more effective training and safety programs for their flight crews.
About the Global Helicopter Flight Data Monitoring Steering Group
The Global Helicopter Flight Data Monitoring Steering Group was formed in March 2010 and seeks to make HFDM as accessible as possible to all operators – both large and small – by sharing the information needed to make HFDM easy to implement. The Global HFDM Steering Group is co-chaired by Capt. Mike Pilgrim, FDM Manager for CHC Helicopter’s European Operations and Joseph Syslo, Senior Manager – Aviation Safety for American Eurocopter. In addition to the 13 member Steering Group, the Global HFDM Community relies on its Communications, Technical, and Operations committees.
