The Advanced Turbine Engine Company LLC (ATEC), the new joint venture between Honeywell (NYSE: HON) and United Technologies Corporation’s (NYSE: UTX) Pratt & Whitney, has selected its senior leadership team, including its new president, Craig Madden. ATEC was created to develop a more efficient, more powerful engine for UH-60 Black Hawk and AH-64 Apache helicopters.

Craig Madden will lead ATEC as president. Madden joined Honeywell in September 2006 as director of U.S. Army and helicopter programs after 30 years of Army service. In the Army, he was an aviation brigade commander and served with the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Jerry Wheeler is vice president, programs, reporting to Madden. Wheeler brings 28 years of experience to ATEC from leadership positions in engineering, operations and program management at Pratt & Whitney. Wheeler has been a member of the ATEC team since the joint venture was launched in late 2007.

ATEC looks forward to fielding a new engine for the UH-60 Black Hawk and AH-64 Apache that will provide a significant increase in capability to the war fighter. The entire ATEC team is very excited to be working on this program.”

In 2007, Honeywell and Pratt & Whitney formed ATEC, LLC, and announced the intent to submit a joint proposal to the U.S. Army’s Aviation Applied Technology Directorate to develop an advanced turboshaft engine for the Advanced Affordable Turbine Engine (AATE) technology demonstrator program. ATEC was awarded a contract for the AATE program in 2008. The AATE demonstrator program is designed to validate the technologies needed to achieve the Army’s aggressive performance goals of 65 percent improvement in shaft horsepower/weight ratio and a 25 percent improvement in specific fuel consumption (SFC) for the next generation 3,000 SHP turboshaft engine.
