This spring the local governments of three prefectures in the northern Kanto region – Tochigi, Gunma and Ibaraki – will jointly operate their ambulance helicopters beyond their prefectural borders in what is claimed to be the first mutual assistance operation of ambulance helicopters in Japan. Similar joint operations also are planned in the Kansai region, making it likely that cooperation between air ambulance and emergency medical services will spread nationwide.
