Anticipated by HeliHub.com’s report of Pawan Hans issuing a tender for two 2-3 seat helicopters which we reported late last week.  It has now been confirmed that state owned Pawan Hans Helicopter Ltd (PHHL) will open its new training academy in the city of Pune.

PHHL has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 7th February with the director general of civil aviation, which controls the Gliding Centre at Pune (GCP), a 230-acre facility at Hadapsar on the eastern outskirts of the city.  “The MoU provides for establishment of a helicopter training academy, among other facilities,” a senior PHHL official confirmed while speaking to TOI on Friday.

Pawan Hans has since established its presence at the gliding centre by moving in a three-member staff, headed by senior official Wg Cdr (retd) Sanjay Sethi and a marketing officer. It has occupied part of the offices and other facilities at the GCP.  According to some parties, the GCP facility has so far remained underutilised, and PHHL’s plans would make much better use of the facility – and the available space is such that the potential exists for facilities to train not just pilots but also engineers and others.

Pawan Hans also has a longer-term plan to establish a heliport at Pune and a commercial service between there and Mumbai, as well as an EMS base and a maintenance facility there.  These plans at Pune are the result of two and a half years of consultation.
