Helicopter Foundation International proudly hosted its second annual Scholarship Fundraising Golf Tournament on Friday, March 4, in conjunction with HELI-EXPO 2011. The event was a great success. There were wonderful prizes awarded, great food, and everyone who participated helped support HFI’s Scholarship program. In total, there were 100 players representing 24 teams, and 35 sponsoring or donating companies.
The day began as registration opened, and the players eagerly made their way toward the driving range and practice putting green in order to be in top form when the tournament got underway. Following a boxed lunch and having received goodie bags containing several golf-related items, the participants were ready for their 12:30 shotgun start. The temperature hit the high 70s, and even though there were a few short bouts of rain, the golfers were able to finish with some very impressive scores.
The top four teams for the day won some great prizes. There was also a gift awarded to the “Most Honest Team.†Items won during the raffle included a new driver, a weekend stay at the Peabody Hotel and Rosen Center, and two wooden helicopter models donated by Unique Handmade Creations—a Sikorsky S-92 and a Bell 429. In addition to the winning foursomes and lucky raffle ticket holders, prizes were awarded for accurate drives on the 5th hole, long drive for Men on the 2nd hole and Women on the 12th hole, and a putting contest after the turn.
Marty Pociask, vice president and curator of Helicopter Foundation International, noted that “This was a great opportunity for members of our industry to share their success by donating. It is a great way to give back to the helicopter community. I’m very grateful to all the players and companies who got involved this year; thank you for making this event so successful.â€
Art Ashton, avid golfer and vice chairman of the HAI Board of Directors, coordinated the event and ensured that the tournament would become one of the highlights of HELI-EXPO®. Matt Zuccaro, president of HAI, was on hand to thank the sponsors and participants for their support of HFI’s scholarship program.
There were many volunteers on hand; including Libby Meade, Nora Schaffer, and several flight school students who helped to ensure that things ran smoothly.
After the tournament, the players were treated to a barbeque dinner as the various winners were announced and the many sponsors who made the event possible were acknowledged. The after-play dinner was sponsored by Bell Helicopter. An autographed book by the “King,†Arnold Palmer, was auctioned off after the dinner.
The 2011 Scholarship Fundraising Golf Tournament beat out previous attendance records. Make sure to sign up for the Tournament next February as part of HELI-EXPO 2012 in Dallas, Texas, and we will see you all again next year!
