Finmeccanica – through its companies AgustaWestland, Alenia Aeronautica, Alenia Aermacchi, DRS Technologies,Oto Melara, SELEX Communications, SELEX Galileo, SELEX Sistemi Integrati, Telespazio (Finmeccanica/Thales) and Wass – will take part in IDEF (International Defense Industry Fair) 2011, to be held in Istanbul,Turkey, from 10 to 13 of May.

For Finmeccanica, Turkey is first and foremost an industrial partner rather than just a potential market. Over the years, close collaboration between Group companies and their Turkish counterparts has led to a solid industrial partnership that extends to the defense and security sectors as well as civil programmes. The activities range from helicopters for military and commercial applications to training and maritime patrol aircraft, radar (both air traffic control and air defense), communications systems, Earth Observation satellite systems, naval systems, urban trains and trams. Last November, Finmeccanica opened its new representative office in Ankara to strengthen the Group’s presence in the country and to develop its leadership in defense and security. Finmeccanica operates in Turkey also through the offices of AgustaWestland, Alenia Aeronautica, Ansaldo STS and through SELEX Komunikasyon A.S, the Turkish subsidiary of SELEX Communications, based in Ankara, with a branch office in Istanbul.

AgustaWestland is a leader in the global helicopter market, offering the most complete range of products able to meet the demands of commercial and military customers. The longstanding collaboration between AgustaWestland and Turkey dates back to the early 1970s, and to date, numerous AgustaWestland commercial helicopters of various types have been ordered by several clients, leading to a total of over 260 military and commercial helicopters being purchased in the country. The models to be exhibited include the: T129, AW109 LUH, AW139 Coast Guard and GrandNew. The T129 is a multi-role combat helicopter developed by the ATAK Team comprising TAI (prime contractor and system integrator), AgustaWestland and Aselsan. The GrandNew is the next generation of the proven Grand platform, with a new digital glass cockpit to provide pilots with situational awareness and flight management capabilities never achieved before in the light twin class. This helicopter which features the latest avionics technology can be used for many roles including Corporate/VIP, EMS, SAR and HPS.

Alenia Aeronautica is Italy’s largest aeronautics company and operates worldwide in the design, development, production, maintenance and modification of commercial and military aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and aerostructures. Alenia Aeronautica and its controlled company Alenia Aermacchi – European leader in the design, development and production of integrated training systems – will be showcasing its capabilities in tactical transport aircraft, special-version aircraft, fighters and trainers. The models to be exhibited include the: C-27J, ATR 72ASW, M- 346 and Eurofighter Typhoon. The C-27J tactical transport aircraft is an optimum solution for Air Force with demanding military mission requirements and larger strategic airlift. Its interoperability and joint use by other NATO partners would provide the Turkish Air Force with a strong transport capability to participate in multinational activities such as peace keeping, humanitarian relief and disaster response. The ATR 72ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) is a highly efficient medium-range aircraft that performs anti-submarine, anti-ship, SAR and EEZ patrol roles. The M-346 aircraft – produced by Alenia Aermacchi and recently purchased by the Italian and Singaporean governments and also selected (48 aircraft) by the UAE Government – is the most Advanced/Lead-In Fighter Trainer in production today and the only new-generation trainer optimized to train pilots to fly new-generation combat aircraft. The M-346 offers very high levels of performance and manoeuvrability  for the most cost-effective solutions and is the ideal platform for next generation Integrated Training Systems, ready to meet the demanding requirements of the most sophisticated Air Forces. Through the Eurofighter consortium, Alenia Aeronautica is part of the Eurofighter programme and leads the Eurofighter marketing effort in Turkey. The Eurofighter Typhoon is the result of a four-nation collaboration of governments and industries (Germany, the UK, Italy and Spain) to produce the most advanced new-generation combat aircraft. The Eurofighter Typhoon is a supersonic twin-engine multi-role aircraft for air defense, interdiction and air superiority, and with a production agreement for more than 700 aircraft, it represents the largest new-generation combat aircraft programme. The Eurofighter Typhoon would guarantee, not only complete air dominance for the Turkish Air Force, to replace the F-4 Phantoms still in service, but would also allow the Turkish aerospace industry to play an important role in the programme, both in terms of technology and innovation in industrial processes, with huge growth in know-how, which can subsequently be transferred to other applications.
