The Government of Australia’s New South Wales state has announced that a new Au$40 million helicopter testing facility will be built at Nowra, creating jobs and boosting the local economy. Deputy premier Andrew Stoner and South Coast MP Shelley Hancock announced on Thursday that Nowra would be the site for the new facility, the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere.
The new facility will support the Australian Defence Force’s helicopter fleets and create 10 new jobs initially, with more expected at a later date. The multi-purpose test facility will be built by BAE Systems and AgustaWestland. Ms Hancock said Nowra, with its strong skills base, history of helicopter servicing and proximity to Canberra made it the “ideal choice” for the centre.
