Integrated Microwave Technologies, LLC, a Business Unit within the Vitec Group’s Videocom Division, and a leader in advanced digital microwave systems for MAG (Military, Aerospace & Government) markets, is taking covert technology to the next level with its ultra compact VSTx COFDM Transmitters and VSRx Dual Diversity COFDM SD Receivers, designed specifically for military, government and law enforcement applications, at IMS 2011 (Booth 3903).

The VSTx is an ultra small, low power, standard definition (SD) COFDM transmitter ideally suited for UAV/UGV, robotic, concealed body-worn video wires and other surveillance applications. The VSTx features superb H.264 SD encoding and operates in the standard 2k DVB-T COFDM mode.

“The small form factor VSTx transmitter is arguably the smallest on the market today,” says Integrated Microwave Technologies President Stephen Shpock. “Our design and development engineers have achieved these small form factor transmitters with specifications that meet or exceed the requirements of our UAV/UGV and public security customers.”

Only two cubic inches in size and weighing in at 26.3 grams, the VSTx is available with two connector options. The first model features a standard connector for simple interfacing in the field. The VSTx can easily be used in fielded small robotic applications, as well as body-worn operations. The second model features a small flex ribbon interface cable that is ideal for direct integration in OEM systems design.

The VSTx transmitter can be operated in 1.25 MHz or 2.5 MHz narrow bandwidth COFDM (NBCOFDM) modes with an RF output up to 100mW. This mode uses the RF spectrum more efficiently, permitting more transmitters to be used simultaneously, or permitting their usage range to be extended. Narrow bandwidth also delivers extended usable range with no additional power output required. The VSTx transmitter DC power consumption is 4W to 8W depending on the RF frequency and power out. This saves battery power and extends runtimes. The VSTx supports video/audio and data transmission with selectable modulation bandwidths of 6, 7 and 8 MHz, requires little setup and is designed to be user friendly.

A video test pattern generator built into the VSTx can be controlled externally using one of the top panel preset switches or programmed to turn on automatically if video input is lost. The VSTx employs AES encryption to prevent unauthorized people from eavesdropping.

For advanced functions such as changing frequency plans, AES encryption keys or unit naming, an easy-to-use administration software package is supplied. This software package allows an administrator to configure up to 16 custom presets. These presets can store as much or as little information as the administrator wishes. Access control permits the administrator to be fully confident that the end user cannot corrupt the configurations.

On the receiver end, IMT’s VSRx is a ruggedized dual diversity COFDM receiver offering exceptional RF performance combined with high ease of operation. The VSRx features superb H.264 SD decoding. These features are combined in a durable package, delivering unequaled value in a high-quality COFDM receiver.

The VSRx features AES decryption capabilities, making it ideal for public security monitoring, covert surveillance and other secure transmission applications. Supporting a broad array of video output signals, including ASI and SD-SDI, the VSRx unit also has a composite video output.

The VSRx is controlled remotely over RS232. The user interface provides rapid user assessment of signal strength, demodulator lock, decryption status and decoding indicators. The VSRx receiver uses standardized cables and requires no special adapters.

“IMT has recognized the need in the military and law enforcement markets for high-quality, small form factor technology – our new VSTx and VSRx hits the mark for covert transmit and receive applications, as it provides the highest quality technology in an extremely compact package,” continues Shpock.

The 2011 IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium is the world’s premier microwave conference. It features a large trade show, technical sessions, workshops and panel sessions in covering a wide range of topics. Attendees are interested in wireless communication, radar, RF technologies, high frequency semiconductors, electromagnetics, commercial and military RF, microwave and mm-wave electronics and applications. Attendees represent an international group of engineers and researchers developing technologies to support the microwave and RF industry.
