Second fatal Robinson R66 accident reported

A second fatal accident has been reported to a Robinson R66.  User “kylesampson” posted the following message on an online forum – “I’m not a pilot I just wanted to get this out there. My wifes uncle just died in a R66 in South Dakota. Anyone who has one better wait and see what happens in this investigation. What I have been told so far is that the rotor came off in mid flight. I just wanted to give other owners a heads up.”

A news report quotes a fatal helicopter accident in South Dakota on Saturday with the pilot stated as “the owner of Cyclone Drilling Inc”

Looking at the registered R66s in the US finds one N266CY (note CY for CYclone) and while this is registered to “P P & J LLC”, the register address for this organisation is indeed the same as that for Cyclone Drilling – in Gillette, Wyoming.

Robinson Helicopter Co has confirmed to HeliHub.com that an R66 was involved in a fatal accident on the weekend.  The NTSB are on scene along with Robinson Helicopter Co investigators and the usual thorough work is being done.

HeliHub.com maintains a page for every accident an incident known to helicopters, both civil and military.  Our page for this accident is at 01-Oct-11 N266CY Robinson R66 Philip, US-South Dakota (1F)
