AgustaWestland acquires VSS CATS aircrewman simulator

Australian company Virtual Simulation Systems (VSS) has completed installation of two Complete Aircrew Training Systems (CATS) at RAF Linton-on-Ouse in the United Kingdom. The CATS simulators will be used by AgustaWestland (AW) as part of a contract to deliver whole crew tactics training.

CATS will provide AW with the ability to teach a range of skills to Aircrewmen from basic vehicle and weapon identification through to formation flying with NVGs, all in an operational virtual environment. CATS is a revolutionary immersive simulator which combines all four basic crewman skill sets of rotor clearances, rescue hoist operations external load operations and door gunnery into a single training device.

CATS heralds a new age of whole crew training in a simulated environment, at a level of fidelity previously only possible in real aircraft. Among CATS innovations are a reconfigurable mock-up that can suit several different airframes (including the Bell 412, UH60, CH-47, S70 and AS332), and a virtual/physical hoist system combined with high-fidelity door gunnery.

This latest delivery follows a three-year lease by the UK MOD of a basic CATS simulator in December 2010 at Middle Wallop. VSS has also recently installed a Mounted Arms Simulator (MArS) at Boscombe Down, United Kingdom for the UK MOD’s Joint Helicopter Command to train gunnery with replica M240 and M134 Minigun on a projection dome. MArS is reconfigurable for Air, Land and Sea gunnery. VSS will be demonstrating CATS, MArS and other simulation products (including the Virtual Marshalling Simulator) at the I/ITSEC conference from Nov 28th to Dec 1st in Orlando, Florida.
