As part of its 12-year Eurocopter-driven overhaul, York Regional Police are using the down-time on its EC120 to do some upgrades. Taken out of service at the end of November 2011, the three month grounding has provided the ideal opportunity for YRP to upgrade their moving-map system.  The force flies C-GYRP, serial 1086, known as “Air 2”

The new mapping system will overlay street names and addresses on the live video feed from the colour and infrared cameras mounted on Air2, according to a report from the police chief’s office.  This is obviously rather more efficient than a standard video feed and a second display with mapping information.  The mapping system will be purchased from Paravion Technologies at a cost of around Can$140,000.

York Regional Police have been maintaining airborne law enforcement through an agreement with neighbours Durham Regional Police.  Durham operate “Air 1” – a Bell 206B serial 4568 and reg C-FASU.
