Eagle Eye Solutions, LLC is offering a one-day seminar entitled “Introduction to Composite Materials for Aircraft Accident Investigators”, this program taught by Dr. Joe Rakow provides an introduction to composite materials for aircraft accident investigators and safety professionals. The seminar will be held on Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012. The training will take place at the DoubleTree (by Hilton), at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, 2826 Terminal Drive, Hebron, KY 41048

The course will introduce students to the very basics of composites:  composition, properties, manufacturing methods, and applications – relating each of these topics to accidents, failures, and the investigation process. By studying these basic topics, students will be equipped with knowledge that will help them analyze failed composites and investigate aircraft accidents.

Illustrative case studies involving composite failures from a wide range of industries will be used throughout the course. For some of the case studies involving small components, students will have a chance to examine physical hardware. Students will leave this class with a fundamental understanding of composite materials and their failure modes.

Dr. Rakow’s expertise includes many areas of mechanical, structural, and aerospace engineering, with particular expertise in composite materials. Dr. Rakow has extensive experience with aerospace structural and mechanical components. Dr. Rakow employs experimentation supplemented with theoretical and numerical analysis to identify and illustrate the root cause of failures.

Dr. Rakow has published a number of scientific articles and frequently presents at national and international technical conferences. He is a contributing author to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Manual of Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation, having authored the chapter addressing failure analysis of composite structures. In addition, Dr. Rakow is a Visiting Lecturer in the Aeronautics and Astronautics Department at Stanford University. Dr. Rakow has also taught an introductory composites course to professional engineers. Additionally, Dr. Rakow previously held teaching and research positions at the University of Michigan and Sandia National Laboratories.
