Portugal’s 751 Squadron, responsible for the country’s SAR helicopters, had achieved a milestone 2,751 rescues.  The key rescue was made in the Azores chain of islands in the Atlantic on 20th May when they transported a pregnant woman from the island of Graciosa to a hospital at Angra do Heroísmo on the island of Terceira.  The actual flight was made by one of the Squadron’s AW101 Merlin helicopters, which are operated alongside an older fleet of SA330 Pumas.

Angra do Heroísmo, known locally as Angra, is the historical capital of the Azores, dating back to 1450 and classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
