Curtiss-Wright Controls Avionics & Electronics (CWC-AE) announced the development of the Information Collection and Monitoring System (ICMS) that meets forthcoming requirements for voice, data and video recording on Part 135 Helicopters as part of a Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA) / Flight Data Monitoring (FDM) program. The ICMS records the complete parameter set defined in FAA Advisory Circular AC29-2C, plus the additional audio and video inputs specified in FAA TSO-C197 and EUROCAE ED-155.Avionics

Paul Hart, Director of Avionics Engineering at CWC-AEs comments “Our design goals for this product go beyond meeting the mandatory requirements. The product will also collect additional data to assist with troubleshooting and for engine warranty programs. Simplified data retrieval has been made a priority too – we utilize standard technologies via the cockpit mounted camera such as USB, Ethernet and the facility to remotely download to a server using 4G.”

The ICMS Recorder is a crash protected unit with integrated GPS, 3-axis MEMS gyros and 3-axis MEMS accelerometers. It records a minimum of 150 hours of data, voice and HD video using H.264 compression. The ICMS Camera/Microphone consists of a 1080p resolution camera and wide-bandwidth area microphone in a single unit. This unit also receives a mirror of the data recorded on the ICMS Recorder (typically installed in the tailboom). Data is formatted into industry-standard ARINC 573/717 data frames that are compatible with the majority of 3rd party FOQA/FDM software packages. The voice and audio recordings contain non-proprietary metadata and timestamps that allow the voice, audio and flight data to synchronized during replay.
