Members of the RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter crew have been awarded National Emergency Medals at a ceremony held at the service’s hangar today.

Presented during a special Rescue 412 (formerly the Rescue 100 Program) breakfast event, National Emergency Medals are given to individuals who respond to nationally significant emergencies within Australia and render extraordinary service in response to such emergencies.

Specifically, the medals recognise the efforts of the RACQ CQ Rescue crew during the natural disaster stricken start to 2011.

In January 2011 the RACQ CQ Rescue crew were deployed to Brisbane to assist with flood relief work, spending eight days completing vital aeromedical missions including transferring patients and delivering medical supplies to isolated hospitals.

In February 2011 RACQ CQ Rescue were deployed to Townsville for six days to provide back-up and aeromedical assistance to emergency crews in the wake of extreme Tropical Cyclone Yasi.

The rescue crew members who have been recognised are pilots Alex Crawford and Brendon Barron, Air Crewmen Darren Bobin and David Williams, Rescue Crewman Justin Craib, and Base Engineer David Jibson.

Past RACQ CQ Rescue crew members Phillip Dowler and Heath Scanlon were also awarded with medals for their efforts.

RACQ CQ Rescue Chief Executive Officer Mark Shield paid tribute to the extraordinary efforts of the crew, saying “apart from the sincere thanks of the patients they help, our crew members often go about their daily lifesaving tasks without the recognition they deserve.”

“These National Emergency Medals have been awarded for specific duties during particular times of national emergency, and they highlight the work of some incredible individuals and what they do every day.”

“While specific crew members have been recognised today, they are also a part of a wider team who are all worthy of exactly the same recognition.”

Deputy Mayor Cr Kevin Casey presented the medals in front of a captive audience of 100 of the service’s Rescue 412 participants, sponsors and other special guests.
