Donaldson Aerospace & Defense, a division of Donaldson Company, Inc. (NYSE: DCI), in March began delivering the next generation of filtration technology to protect engines on the U.S. Army’s H-60 BLACK HAWK helicopter fleet from contamination, performance degradation and failure.
The next-generation technology replaces woven oil-coated filtration media with non-woven dry media using Donaldson’s proprietary nano-fiber technology to provide 99 percent particle separation for the BLACK HAWK’s Inlet Barrier Filtration (IBF) systems. Donaldson developed the application in response to an Army request.
Dry media is easier to maintain than the oil-coated type and can be cleaned using basic techniques. This helps reduce maintenance and support requirements in the field. Donaldson is the first manufacturer to offer dry media filtration for helicopter engines.
Donaldson has delivered more than 600 IBF systems for Army BLACK HAWKs. Donaldson IBF systems are also standard on Army Special Operations Boeing MH/AH-6 Little Birds and Bell OH-58D/F Kiowa Warriors, and Donaldson recently delivered 75 additional OH-58 kits. The company also has been selected by Pratt & Whitney AeroPower to provide factory-installed filtration solutions for H-60 auxiliary power units.
“Since its formation 30 years ago this month, Army Aviation has consistently made the most of available technology to bring support and protection to the warfighter,” said Eric Erickson, who joined the company last year as General Manager of Donaldson Aerospace & Defense’s St. Louis division. “As the Army’s primary rotorcraft filtration supplier, Donaldson is proud to continue our tradition of helping Army aircrews perform those critical missions safely and reliably.”
Donaldson will be exhibiting its dry media kit, inlet barrier filtration systems and other advanced filtration solutions at Booth No.1644 during the Army Aviation Association of America’s Annual Professional Forum and Exposition April 10-13, 2013 in the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
