National Hospitality and Brewing company, Colonial Leisure Group (CLG) owner of Nautilus Aviation in Townville has entered into a contract to buy Heli Charters in Cairns and the combined business will make it one of the biggest helicopters fleets in northern Queensland.

This is the third investment in the region, with CLG acquiring Orpheus Island, the popular secluded holiday destination in the Great Barrier Reef in 2011 and Nautilus Aviation in 2012, Chris Morris the owner of CLG and founder of Computershare is proposing further investment in tourism in the region in the future.

“Our aim is to support local tourism in the region by serving tourist attractions in and around northern Queensland with a top-rate helicopter service and maintenance services,” says Morris.

Heli Charters will offer services to Orpheus Island and link to other luxury resorts like Pullman Resort and Thala Beach Lodge. The combined helicopter fleet will cover tourism charter and commercial operations including; mining, telecommunications and government contracts.

The purchase includes 3 helicopters making a total fleet of 7 helicopters which will increase in the near future by the purchase of more helicopters. The new company will be managed by Aaron Finn, CEO of Nautilus Aviation and employee over 20 staff based in Cairns and Townsville.

Based at an international airport, Heli Charters will be in a position to better service the tourism industry, with visitors arriving from all corners of the globe. A direct flight will now be offered from Cairns to Orpheus Island, complementing the existing Townsville-Orpheus Island route.

The announcement follows the recent appointment of Tony Barradale to General Manager of Orpheus Island. Barradale brings more than 15 years of experience to the island; having worked at premium resorts in Tasmania and Queensland’s Whitsunday Islands; to developing the concept and design for a world-class private resort in Indonesia. Barradale has plans to introduce a luxurious spa to the island in the coming months.
