A DOT Inspector General’s (IG) report requested by the U.S. House of Representatives Transportation Committee’s Aviation panel was released May 6 saying he FAA has “room for improvement” on oversight of aircraft repair stations.

In the third audit in 10 years of FAA’s oversight of more than 4,000 aircraft repair stations worldwide that maintain U.S. aircraft, the IG found that the FAA is more focused on mandatory inspections than shifting resources based on risk. And while the FAA has taken strides toward implementing a risk-based inspection system, the auditors found there was still work to be done.

“Until the agency modifies its inspection system, FAA’s ineffective oversight could lead to repair stations operating contrary to federal aviation regulations and decreasing the margin of safety,” the IG wrote.

The IG made nine recommendations. The FAA concurred with all of the recommendations, although the IG said that the FAA’s interim actions were sufficient regarding only six of them.
