Curtiss-Wright Controls, Inc. today announced that it has received a contract from Korean Aerospace Industries (KAI) to supply its Rotor Ice Protection (RIPS), Windshield and Engine Anti Ice Controllers technology for use on the Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH). The initial value of the contract is $5 million. Shipments of the products are scheduled to begin in October, 2013.

“We are very proud that KAI has awarded Curtiss-Wright this follow-on contract for our industry-leading RIPS rotor ice protection technology,” said Tom Quinly, president of Curtiss-Wright Controls.  “This agreement expresses confidence in the value that our RIPS system delivers to the Korean military’s important KUH helicopter platform.”

The Curtiss-Wright Controls Avionics & Electronics (CWC-AE) division will manufacture the products covered by this agreement at its City of Industry, CA facility. The products are being shipped to KAI in South Korea.

Curtiss-Wright RIPS products extend the operational capacity of an aircraft in mixed or unpredictable weather, enabling continued flight operations in icy conditions without risking pilot safety, mission requirements, or equipment damage. Technologies such as status monitoring and advanced power distribution give the crew more information, more flight time, more safety, and reduce fatigue, both for the pilots and for the craft.

The Curtiss-Wright Controls Avionics & Electronics (CWC-AE) division’s Ice Protection Controller (IPC) efficiently keeps surfaces such as engine inlets and windshields free from icing. Using onboard electrical power eliminates bleed air demand on engines, and helps to improve propulsion efficiency. Zero-crossing AC power switching is used to minimize switch stresses and lower EMI. Circuits ensure that a “soft-start” load current is used so power systems and target surfaces are not suddenly strained.
