HAI’s director of safety outreach programs, Stan Rose, and Jose Orozco, HAI’s safety programs coordinator, are in Mexico City were they took part in the 7th Annual Safety Meeting for Aeronautical Pilots from November 12-13, hosted by HAI Affiliate Member Colegio de Pilotos Aviadores de Mexico, A.C.

Increased demand and use of rotorcraft in Mexico has not been met with adequate training and education for pilots and mechanics. Recognizing a need for helicopter safety seminars and workshops to help reduce the accident rate, the Colegio de Pilotos Aviadores for the first time dedicated the safety meeting solely to rotorcraft operations, and invited HAI to participate.

The two-day seminar attracted more than 160 attendees from various military and civil aviation organizations. Featuring industry experts from Mexico and the United States, the seminar covered SMS, human factors, training, just culture, and many other topics. Stan Rose gave a presentation on safety initiatives and “SMS, the language of the new safety culture.”

Mr. Miguel Chavez, president of Colegio de Pilotos Aviadores, commented: “The rotorcraft problems Mexico is facing are the same the rest of the world is facing, but Mexico is not doing enough to address the problems; we need more training, more safety meetings, and education for our pilots and mechanics. This is the only way we will improve our safety culture and reduce our accident rate. We thank HAI for being here to share their wealth of knowledge with us.”

With a better than expected attendance and positive response from attendees, Mr. Chavez and other officials expressed great interest in holding periodic helicopter safety seminars in Mexico City and throughout the country.
