Aviation Specialties Unlimited appoints VP/Chief Technology Officer

Aviation Specialties Unlimited (ASU) announced this week that Dr. Joseph Estrera has joined the company as the new Chief Technology Officer and Vice President for Advanced Technology.

Estrera is responsible for new product development in aviation, ground, and emerging market areas.  Prior to joining ASU, he worked with L-3 Warrior Systems for more than 20 years and was engaged in the development of laser, image intensifier and infrared technologies and night vision products.

For decades, his ability to take new ideas and bring them to market in the form of game changing technology has directly benefited operators worldwide. We look forward to better serving our customers with a dynamic product portfolio that leverages new technology and Dr. Estrera’s experience and ingenuity.”

Chairing two international technology forums each year, Estrera is an active study of material sciences, sensors, image fusion, and electro-optics. He was principal and co-principal investigator and system architect in several major U.S. military soldier development programs, including the Digital Night Vision System, Digital Enhanced Night Vision Goggle, and Fused Multispectral Weapon Sight.

“ASU has a great reputation in the industry and I am honored to join their team,” said Estrera. “I look forward to bringing new, exciting, and innovative ASU products to market in the near future.  My initial areas of emphasis include next generation NVIS lighting solutions and development of aerial system payload technologies.”

Estrera has received numerous awards and industry recognition. He was awarded the U.S. Army CECOM Defense Acquisition Executive Certificate of Achievement and received corporate awards from Litton, Northrop Grumman and L-3 Communications.  Dr. Estrera has authored technical papers, holds multiple patents, is frequently published in technical and industry journals, and speaks often at symposiums and seminars.  He is currently a member of the American Physical Society, Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers, and American Vacuum Society, and is an assistant adjunct professor of physics at the University of Texas at Dallas since 1996.

He received his Ph.D. and M.S. in physics from The University of Texas at Dallas, and his B.S. in physics from the University of Notre Dame.
