Russ Altieri, technical lead for the Hub Mounted Vibration Suppressor project, will present a paper at the American Helicopter Society’s (AMS) Annual Forum 70 and Technology Display.

The presentation will take place May 20, 2014 at 8:30 a.m. at the Palais des congrès de Montréal in Montréal, Québec. The paper is titled, “Ground and Flight Testing of a Hub Mounted Vibration Suppression System.” Altieri co-authored the paper with Joseph Andrews and William Welsh of Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation and James DiOttavio of Army Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD).

The presentation will highlight the performance of an active vibration control system consisting of a dual-frequency Hub Mounted Vibration Suppressor (HMVS) that was designed, fabricated, bench tested, and flight tested. In addition, the presentation will review key data from bench tests conducted at a LORD Corporation test facility on a CH-3 fuselage, as well as subsequent flight tests conducted on a UH-60A BLACK HAWK helicopter at the AATD flight test facility in Ft. Eustis, Va.

“HMVS Technology has now been successfully tested and validated on an aircraft. This is a major milestone for rotary wing aviation. The next step will be to combine HMVS with LORD Corporation’s cabin-based AVC technology, which can result in near-zero vibration levels globally within the helicopter, and at significantly reduced weight,” said Altieri.

Altieri has more than 17 years of experience at LORD Corporation working on active systems. He also has expertise in electro-mechanical systems, aerospace system engineering, motor control, embedded software development and Active Vibration Control algorithm development. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and his master’s degree from North Carolina State University.
