Sandel Avionics, Inc., the global leader in wire, terrain, and obstacles alerting technology for helicopters, today announced that the Russian Aviation Authorities and MIL Design Bureau has issued an official Service Installation Bulletin, equivalent to an FAA STC, for Sandel ST3400H HeliTAWS® installations in the Mi-8 AMT and Mi-8 MTV-1 helicopters. This makes HeliTAWS the only non-Russian manufactured HTAWS approved for installation in Russia.

“Based on our knowledge of the market and demand from our customers to install HeliTAWS, we completed the intensive Russian process for approval with Sandel and UTair Aviation, “Said Boris Nekrasov, President of APG/NEBO. “Sandel HeliTAWS is setting the world-wide standard for HTAWS.”

The certification requirement was driven heavily by UTair, the largest helicopter operator in Russia, who has flown Sandel’s HeliTAWS and found it to be highly capable and affordable. It was a significant cooperative effort between UTair supplying the flight crews and helicopter, APG/NEBO supplying installation and on-site technical support, and Sandel providing on-site engineering support. Ultimately, revised alerting parameters were developed by Sandel to meet the Russian requirements.

HeliTAWS is a 3-ATI self-contained, high-performance Helicopter Terrain Awareness and Warning System. Its proprietary alerting technology, TruAlert, enables pilots to take off, cruise, hover and land at off-airport locations without triggering nuisance alerts.

“At this time, Sandel, UTAir and APG/NEBO are working together to extend the approval for the entire family of Mi-8/17 helicopters and others,” said Jerry Henry, Director of Sales for Sandel. “To do this we will continue to work with the MIL Design Bureau, Russian State Scientific and Research Institute of Civil Aviation, and Airborne Equipment Certification Center of Russia.”
