AAMS is pleased to announce the PHI Air Medical Honor Guard as our 2015 recipient of the Excellence in Community Service Award. The award will be presented on Tuesday, March 24th during the AAMS Spring Leadership Conference at the Crystal City Marriott Gateway hotel in Arlington, Va. AAMS presents this award annually to an emergency medical transport organization that demonstrates broad-based continuing commitment to the communities they serve.

PHI Air Medical Honor Guard, the only air medical guard in the nation, receives this distinguished honor for their outstanding support of the communities it serves as a resource for assistance, and as an aid in the grieving process, by responding to requests for air medical and emergency services funeral services. The Honor Guard has teamed with EMS and Fire Service Honor Guards around the country in remembrance of fallen comrades.

In the aftermath of a series of air medical crashes in 2008, it became apparent to PHI crew members that there was a need for a new resource in planning and coordination of funeral ceremonies. Through the course of managing its own response to these events, PHI Air Medical quickly realized the need for a core body of individuals prepared for and capable of responding to these events. As the concept evolved, PHI Air Medical took stock and acted with purposeful clarity to form the PHI Air Medical Honor Guard. The military Honor Guard is born from origins over 200 years old, dating back to the 3rd United States Infantry Regiment (the First American Regiment, formed in 1784), or the “Old Guard.” One of the primary missions of the Honor Guard has been to conduct memorial affairs to honor fallen comrades, ceremonies, and special events. Over time, this tradition has been adopted by civilian uniformed services as a means to honor uniformed civilians who have died in the line of duty or who have passed away after retiring from an accomplished and honorable career. The traditions of the Honor Guard are rich and the members stand in quiet reserve, reflecting a commitment to integrity, professionalism, respect, perseverance, and devotion. The PHI Air Medical Honor Guard respectfully serves with humility as the world’s first Air Medical Honor Guard, carrying forth these values to the air medical community. Today, the PHI Air Medical Honor Guard not only responds in the wake of a crash, but also works within the community to focus attention on the importance of awareness and professionalism to the goals of safety recognition and risk mitigation.
