Becker Helicopters Pilot Academy is delighted to announce that one of its apprenticed Maintenance Technician’s, David Betts, was chosen as a 2017 Helicopter Foundation International (HFI) Scholarship winner.

HFI annually offers up to 19 scholarships to help support students studying to become part of tomorrow’s vertical aviation industry. The HFI Maintenance Technician Certificate Scholarship is awarded each year to a maximum of six students enrolled in a maintenance technician certificate program at an FAA-approved Part 147 school or international equivalent.

The scholarship awards USD$2,500 toward the cost of obtaining the aviation maintenance certificate. In addition to the HFI Scholarship, David has received full registration for two to attend Helicopters Association International (HAI) HELIEXPO and HAI’s “Salute to Excellence” Awards Dinner. The Scholarship also includes invitations to attend the Career Round-table, HFI’s Career Fair and a one-year membership to HAI with a subscription to ROTOR magazine.

On receiving the scholarship David said “Becoming an Aviation Maintenance Technician has been a long term goal of mine for some time. I feel very fortunate to be conducting my training with a professional and safety focused company such as Becker Helicopters. To receive one of the Helicopter Foundation International Scholarships and the opportunity to travel to the 2017 HELI-EXPO in Dallas as part of the Becker’s HAI Delegation is something that I am looking forward to and I’m sure will be of benefit to not only myself but our company and ultimately the industry as a whole as we push towards a zero accident future.”

David is in his second year as a mature age Apprentice Maintenance Technician with Becker Helicopters in Australia. He has had a diverse career background within Helicopter Search and Rescue, Ambulance Paramedic and is a former Royal Australian Navy Clearance Diver.

During his apprenticeship he has cycled through the servicing, depot maintenance, component repair and overhaul as well as utilizing his previous skills to train and provide a First Response (safety) presence at Becker Helicopters.

The Directors of Becker Helicopters are proud to have David as part of their HAI delegation this year and have also sponsored David’s entry to the education program “Safety Management System – From the Top Down” conference. This will provide David with a greater understanding of the role of safety within the industry.

COE of Becker Helicopters, Jan Becker said “HAI Heli Expo is a fantastic opportunity for David and others to see how big the actual Helicopter world is in terms of new helicopter and support equipment technologies, the vast training and education, the Rotor Safety Challenge also offers aviators a chance to rub shoulders with an international community on key safety issues and training scenarios. The whole Dallas experience aligns with Becker Helicopters’ unrelenting commitment to organisational safety and staff education.” We are delighted that David was selected to receive this scholarship – it is well deserved.”
