In the future, DRF Luftrettung will train professional helicopter pilots. In 2022 the first “integrated training to become a professional helicopter pilot * in CPL (H) with ATPL theory” will start. For the first time, trainee pilots can benefit from the concentrated expertise of the air rescue organization with their over 45 years of experience in HEMS operations and their own highly qualified flight instructors.

The DRF Luftrettung Academy is expanding its portfolio: It is expected that the first flight students will be able to train to become professional helicopter pilots at DRF Luftrettung as early as next year. Preparations are still in full swing, the course content and application modalities are being specified and the necessary coordination with the authorities is being carried out. The almost two-year training will take place in the DRF Air Rescue Academy in Bühl and at the DRF Air Rescue Operation Center at Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden Airport. In addition to the regular training content, the participants will also benefit from practical insights into the various areas of air rescue organization, e.g. in seminars with the technical and medical departments of the DRF Luftrettung.

“There has been a steadily high demand for helicopter pilots for years. That is why we want to position ourselves on the market with a high-quality training program and at the same time recruit our own young pilots. As one of the largest European air rescue organizations, it is also our goal to pass on our expertise to third parties and make a further contribution to aviation safety. There is also the possibility of expanding the range of training courses and addressing other air rescue organizations, police authorities and private customers, ”explains Dr. Peter Huber, board member of DRF Luftrettung.

The prospective pilots learn the essential basic knowledge on a special training helicopter. On these flights and in their entire training process, they are guided and accompanied by flight instructors with extensive experience. Among them are also pilots from air rescue stations whose great aviation know-how comes from many years in the use of DRF Luftrettung. Her wealth of experience ranges from night flights and winch rescues to take-offs and landings in densely built-up areas to operations in impassable and alpine terrain. Since 2004, DRF Luftretttung has been offering courses within its “Approved Training Organization” for the acquisition of type, instruction and instrument flight authorizations for various types of helicopters.

After successfully completing their training, the participants are not only entitled, but also optimally prepared to start their career as a professional pilot. Those who then acquire further qualifications and experience could also help save human lives as a pilot at DRF Luftrettung.
