Helicopter Association International (HAI) welcomes the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) and National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s (NTIA) plan to establish the Spectrum Coordination Initiative. The goal of this initiative is to improve US government coordination on spectrum management and encourage collaboration to resolve spectrum policy issues.

“HAI is encouraged to see the FCC and NTIA acknowledge there are severe gaps in coordination on spectrum policy. For years, HAI and many other aviation stakeholders have stated the need to fix this broken system. It is likely that additional reforms will be necessary to ensure costly missteps are avoided in the future, but the commitments included in the Spectrum Coordination Initiative are a positive development,” says James Viola, HAI President and CEO. “HAI again thanks Chair Larsen, Ranking Member Graves, and members of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Aviation for their leadership in addressing spectrum management and aviation safety in their recent hearing on 5G deployment.”

As part of the initiative, the FCC and NTIA committed to foster proactive technical exchange and engagement with industry and other federal agencies by participating in cross-agency advisory groups. Several other commitments are included in the initiative: reinstating high level meetings, reaffirming roles and responsibilities, renewing efforts to develop a national spectrum strategy, recommitting to scientific integrity and evidence-based policymaking, and revamping technical collaboration. HAI and the aviation industry stand ready to support spectrum management efforts that prioritize the safety of the national airspace system.
