Cheetah helicopter of the Indian Army taking part in the ongoing military exercise at the Jat Regimetanl Centre (JRC) at Bareilly crashed minutes after take-off killing all three on board. It had gained only a few hundred metres in height when it caught fire mid-air. Another report states it was a maintenance flight. The three were named as Major Abhijai Thapa, 29, Major Vikas Varyani, 29 and Captain Avinash Somavanshi, 26.

A BSF (Border Security Force) helicopter on anti-Naxal duty crashed on the outskirts of Ranchi today, killing two pilots and a technician on board. The Dhruv was going to Chaibasa from Ranchi when its engine caught fire and it crashed in Khunti jungle, a senior BSF official said. Aircraft completely burnt out. Pilot named as Captain K V Thomas (52), and co-pilot as S P Singh Bhandal, age 55

The Cheetah helicopter was on a routine air maintenance sortie when the crash landing took place at 0810 hours, IAF sources said in New Delhi. Defence Ministry sources said the two pilots on board the helicopter were injured and were evacuated to Leh for treatment.
