Helicopter was carrying Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osibanjo and his aides, none of whom were seriously injured.  There was a total of 12 POB including crew.  Brown out on approach was contributory to the end result – helicopter on its starboard side.

Crashed into Lagos Lagoon, on approach to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport at Lagos.Names were released by the AIB and published by Vanguard:-

  • 6 recovered,named as Joshua Emekeme, Dolu Ebiejuara, Onoriode Onojete, Solomon Udeh, Iniala Opaimi, Chukwudi Onah
  • 6 fatalities, named as pilot Peter Bello co-pilot Jay Wyatt, Chukwuma Erise, Chidi Ukwunta, Ita Ekpeyong, and Chis Abua

Nigerian Police helicopter crashed at the main Lagos Airport close to the VIP area. Helicopter may be used for presidential work and has been referred to in some reports as a “presidential helicopter”. 4 POB – pilot, copilot and two NAF employees – all injured but not seriously

A Nigerian Air Force Mi-35 Helicopter on a training mission crashed, reportedly due to a technical fault – although some reports suggest the involvement of insurgents in Borno State.

Initial reports stated one dead, one survived, one missing presumed dead – but the latter trekked through the bush and back to base

Six killed including  the Governor of Kaduna State, Patrick Yakowa and former National Security Adviser, Gen. Andrew Owoeye Azazi. Aircraft was involved in shuttle operations transporting people to/from the funeral of the father of Oronto Douglas, one of the President’s aides.  Airframe total time 1704 hours according to this report

While on “routine aerial patrol” the helicopter crashed into a residential area.  Reports vary as to number of fatalities, but general consensus is 7 in the helicopter and 5 on the ground.  Nigerian Police press release names four in the helicopter –  DIG Haruna John the DIG In-charge of Operations, ACP Garba Yalwa – Pilot, CSP Alexander Pwol-Ja co-pilot and Sgt Sonatian Shirunam – orderly.  One newspaper reports only a pig killed on the ground!

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the helicopter in an obvious difficulty when one of its doors followed by a rotor blade falling off from the sky. They said they watched the helicopter going on a free spin before a loud bang followed apparently when it eventually crashed killing all four on board

One person died and three others were critically injured when a helicopter on a chartered flight crashed near the southwestern Nigerian oil city of Warri.  The helicopter was reported to be modifying its flight plan on account of bad weather in Port Harcourt before losing contact with air traffic controllers. It ran into high-tension power cables
