RCMP officials believe a helicopter parked temporarily at the landing pad at Nakusp Hot Springs was specifically targeted by vandals for its work in evaluating mineral resources in the area.  The incident occurred sometime between April 2 and April 3, said RCMP Constable Tim McDonald.

The helicopter was ground taxied onto a parking spot and brought to a stop by the commander, who was the pilot flying. He then intended to apply the parking brake but inadvertently raised the collective control lever, which caused the helicopter to become airborne. He released the collective control lever, which was lowered by the collective trim system to the fully down position, and the helicopter landed heavily, causing damage to the landing gear and airframe.

One fatality, two critical, one serious aboard USMC H-53 helicopter which came down in the sea two miles off Kaneohe Air Station.  USCG and Honolulu Fire Dept helicopters attending.  Fatality later named as Cpl. Jonathan D. Faircloth, 22, of Mechanicsburg, PA.  Others on board were pilot Maj. Clinton J. Collins, co-pilot Capt. Kevin F. Hayles, and crew chief Cpl. Ronnie E. Brandafino.

After the passengers had boarded the aircraft, the commander heard a noise and the aircraft suddenly settled and adopted a nose high attitude. The engines were shut down, the passengers and crew disembarked. Subsequent examination of the aircraft by the crew showed that the undercarriage aft crosstube had failed, due to metallurgical fatigue.
